DAILY PIC: L&M Arts, on New York’s Upper East Side, is showing a stunning selection of Frank Stella’s early, and massively influential, abstractions – including these copper-toned works. What impresses me most is how impossible it is to choose between reading Stella’s paintings for their perceptual effects (how they explore the beauty of lines and shapes and surfaces) and their conceptual rigor (how they follow simple rules dictated by the shape and size of Stella’s stretcher and brush). He’s the art historical hinge between sensual abstract expressionism and brainy minimal art – tendencies that normally exclude each other.

Robert Boyd is a Houston-based art enthusiast who documents the scene really well over at his blog, The Great God Pan is Dead. He spent this past weekend in New York, however, and has thrown down the gauntlet with this art identification quiz from his visit. You should totally enter, but I was more amused with the self-shot style of photography Robert employed. So much so that I made this animated GIFs from the quiz images.

As co-director of Skydive Art Space in Houston, I’m thrilled to be showing the work of Brooklyn artist Brian Dupont and San Francisco artist Chris Rusak in a two-person show of contemporary painting, opening May 17th. Brian and Chris set up a Kickstarter to help fund travel and shipping costs, and it’s been very successful. There’s still time though, should you want add your own financial support and take advantage of some awesome art rewards.

Box 13, a Houston artist-run studio and exhibition space, is holding their annual Empty Box fundraiser this Saturday. I was asked to donate a work to their silent auction, and it’s pictured above (disregard the bag). The limited edition inkjet print is titled Learning about Ilene Segalove via Blake Gopnik’s Tumblr and comes already beautifully framed.

There will be lots of other work available via silent auction; click here and scroll down for a list of participating artists. Come on out on Cinco de Mayo and support a local arts org — there will be great art to be won!
